Buildings, including industrial and commercial buildings, consume 45% of total electricity generation from the main grid or other local generations, leading to global warming and a significant high CO2 emission to the environment.

Almost 50% of building energy consumption is attributed to air conditioning systems. In a tropical region like Singapore, space cooling is essential for industrial or commercial buildings throughout the year to improve productivity, comfort level and indoor air quality. As chiller plants are essential part of the buildings and consume significant amount of energy, this module focuses on the fundamental of chiller plants and its associated components such as blowers, fans, piping network and ducting networks.

Operation of chiller plant is also paramount to optimize the energy consumption in the buildings, and thus selection of chiller plays a considerable role in such energy efficient operation of the plant. In addition, water system and air system also contribute part of chiller plant’s energy efficiency.

This module focuses on the chiller plants and includes the following sub-topics:

  • Fundamental of chiller plants and its associated components
  • Selection of chillers
  • Water side circulation system
  • Fundamental of cooling towers and its operation
  • Chiller selection and chiller plant design consideration
  • Minimizing the energy consumption of chiller plant
